UNRA re-opens Kanungu Bridge
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has declared Ntungwa bridge, which collapsed two months ago, open to traffic. The bridge is located on Ishasha – Kaseese road between Rukungiri and Kanungu districts. It was commissioned on Monday by Kanungu Resident District commissioner Canon Ben Bwagi Rullonga and the event witnessed by officials from Congo.
The Bridge which connects Uganda to Congo, collapsed two months ago, forcing long distance truck drivers to use Mitano bridge, which lies between Rukungiri and Kanungu hills. However, barely a month after, Mitano bridge also collapsed 8under the weight of heavy trucks. This forced Kanungu leaders to meet President Yoweri Museveni after transport to and from the district became a nightmare. The President promised to have Ntungwa Bridge repaired before the end of this month.
While officiating at the commissioning of the bridge, Rulonga stressed that over loaded trucks would not be allowed to use the bridge. “We shall use mobile weigh-bridges to monitor the movements of the trucks and ensure that drivers head traffic regulations,” Rullonga said.
